Reddit shares your public posts with Google and OpenAI for AI training, and there is no way to opt out. The platform is also one of the largest ad-driven, data-monetized sites on the web.
About the assessment
Reddit is closed-source and US-based, encrypting data at rest and in transit but offering no end-to-end encryption for messages. Since 2024, Reddit has licensed public posts to Google (~$60M/year) and OpenAI (~$70M/year) for AI training, with no way to opt out short of deleting content or the account — a practice now under FTC inquiry. The platform shares behavioral data with advertisers and removed its ad-personalization opt-out in 2023. No independent security audit was found, though a public bug-bounty program exists. Since its March 2024 IPO, Reddit is publicly traded with concentrated control (Advance Publications ~30%, Tencent ~11%, founder Huffman holding majority voting power). A GDPR-style data export and a WCAG accessibility commitment stand out as strengths.
Strengths
- Full GDPR-style data export in JSON/CSV
- WCAG 2.1 A/AA accessibility commitment published
- Free tier is feature-complete
- 20+ years of continuous operation
- Public bug-bounty program (HackerOne)
Weaknesses
- AI content licensing to Google/OpenAI has no opt-out
- No end-to-end encryption for messages
- Behavioral data shared with advertisers
- No independent security audit
- Closed source; no public code
- No self-hosting; third-party API access heavily restricted
- No regional pricing for Reddit Premium
- US jurisdiction; CLOUD Act exposure

Reddit is a US company; its privacy policy states that data is processed and stored primarily on US servers, with no dedicated EU data residency option for users. This places Reddit content and account data under US jurisdiction, including exposure to the CLOUD Act.

Reddit encrypts data in transit via TLS and stores it on encrypted infrastructure, but there is no end-to-end encryption for chat or direct messages. Reddit's systems can read message content, including in response to legal requests. This is standard encryption at rest and in transit, not E2EE.

Reddit's privacy policy discloses that it shares behavioral and demographic data with advertising partners for ad targeting and that it receives interest data from advertisers to combine with its profiles. In September 2023, Reddit removed the ad-personalization opt-out for many users, reducing their ability to limit this sharing.

Since February 2024, Reddit has licensed public post content to Google (~$60M/year for Gemini training and on-site AI search) and, from May 2024, to OpenAI (reportedly ~$70M/year) for use in ChatGPT. There is no opt-out from these deals: the rights come from Reddit's User Agreement content grant. The only way to exclude content is to delete it, post only in private subreddits, or close the account. The FTC opened an inquiry into these practices in 2024.

2Openness & TransparencyLicense, auditability, open governance, and independent security assurance.0%
Reddit's platform and apps are closed-source, with no public repository for the core product. There is no way for an outside party to inspect, audit, or fork Reddit's code.

No independent security audit, SOC 2 report, or ISO certification was found for Reddit. Reddit runs a public HackerOne bug-bounty program, which paid out roughly $140,000 across 300 reports during its private phase before opening to the public. This is a genuine security practice but not equivalent to an independent audit with a public report.

Reddit is a closed-source, commercially operated platform with no public contribution process or documented governance model for the underlying product. Subreddit-level community moderation is a separate structure. It governs content within communities, not the platform's development.

3Pricing ModelHow users pay for the product, whether pricing relies on exploiting user data, and how fair and transparent prices are across regions.35.3%
Advertising is Reddit's dominant revenue model. Q2 2026 ad revenue reached $762 million, up 64% year-over-year, marking the eighth consecutive quarter of over 60% growth. Reddit Premium, an ad-free subscription (~$5.99/month or $49.99/year with cosmetic perks), is a clearly secondary option. Most users experience Reddit through the free, ad- and data-driven product.

The free tier is feature-complete: posting, commenting, voting, joining communities, and chat all work without payment. Premium adds convenience and cosmetic perks (no ads, coins, avatar gear, higher limits) rather than gating core functionality. However, the free tier's ad-supported model relies on behavioral data collection, so it does not qualify as monetization-free.

No lawsuit, regulatory action, or substantiated report of dark-pattern billing was found specifically for Reddit Premium, and its price and feature set are consistently and clearly listed. One academic study cited Reddit-the-forum as a place where complaints about other companies' dark patterns surface, which is not evidence against Reddit's own billing practices.

No evidence was found of purchasing-power-adjusted regional pricing for Reddit Premium; the price appears to be a flat $5.99/month applied globally, with no documented country-specific discount program comparable to those offered by services that do.

4Ownership & PortabilityUser control over data and vendor lock-in, including export, self-hosting, offline use, cross-platform availability, and accessibility.45%
Reddit's official "Request my data" tool (Settings → Data request) lets users export their full account history — posts, comments, saved items, messages, and votes — as a ZIP archive with JSON and CSV files, fulfilling GDPR-style data-access requests. This is full export in open, machine-readable formats.

Reddit requires an internet connection for all core functions; there is no official offline mode. Any offline reading comes from unofficial third-party tools, not Reddit itself.

Reddit officially supports web, iOS, Android, and a Windows app but has no official Linux build or F-Droid distribution. Third-party open-source clients (Apollo, RIF, Sync, BaconReader) were largely killed by Reddit's 2023 API pricing changes. Reddit has since restricted access further by closing self-service OAuth signup in November 2025 and blocking unauthenticated access to the .json endpoint in mid-2026. This leaves only paid or tightly rate-capped API access.

Reddit publishes a dedicated accessibility statement citing a target of WCAG 2.1 Level A/AA conformance, a dedicated in-house accessibility team, and a public accessibility contact address — a clear, documented commitment, though no formal VPAT was found.

5Independence & EthicsOwnership, independence from Big Tech, stability over time, and whether the company shows responsible behavior in ethics, advertising, and environmental impact.33.3%
Reddit went public on the NYSE (RDDT) in March 2024 and is no longer VC-funded. It is an independent publicly traded company. Ownership remains concentrated: Advance Publications (Condé Nast's parent, the Newhouse family) has held roughly 30% since a 2006 investment, Tencent holds about 11% from a 2019 investment, and co-founder Steve Huffman retains majority voting control through 10-votes-per-share Class B stock. None of the Fair Score's four structure categories fits a public company with this concentrated legacy-investor and founder control; "VC-funded" is used here as the closest bucket given the continuing influence of pre-IPO institutional investors.

Reddit has not been acquired but underwent a major structural change in the last three years. Its March 2024 initial public offering converted it from a private, VC-backed company into a publicly traded one. Existing large shareholders (Advance Publications, Tencent) retained significant stakes through the IPO, so this is a restructuring of ownership form rather than a change of controlling owner. It is closer to an internal restructuring than an acquisition.

Reddit has a 2024 content/data licensing policy governing commercial API use and a 2026 policy requiring disclosure of AI-generated ads. However, it has no broad public ethics policy addressing harmful use, advertising limits, or AI data practices in general. A May 2026 privacy policy update expanded the permitted sharing of public content with "LLM providers" for search and summarization, which runs counter to a strong ethical-commitment framing.

Reddit reported 130.3 million global daily active users in Q2 2026, up 18% year-over-year. Ad revenue rose 64% year-over-year for the eighth consecutive quarter of over 60% growth. This is clear evidence of an actively growing, heavily used platform, not a quiet or declining one.
