Proton Mail
Proton Mail is an end-to-end encrypted email service based in Switzerland. It offers zero-access storage, no ads, and open-source clients. It's subscription-based, but there is also a free tier.
About the assessment
Proton Mail stands out because of its technical design. All client apps are open source under the GPL, and the service has ISO 27001 certification, SOC 2 Type II attestation, and annual third-party audits. In June 2024, Proton AG transferred its shares to a Swiss foundation, which must adhere to its charter and mission under Swiss law. The infrastructure uses only renewable hydroelectric power. However, there are also structural weaknesses: there is no self-hosted backend, the free tier is limited to 1 GB and 150 messages per day, and the global pricing does not account for differences in purchasing power. Proton Mail v7 introduced native offline mode for iOS and Android, so users no longer need Bridge. Accessibility remains an issue, as there is no WCAG statement and screen reader support is still lacking.

- ISO 27001, SOC 2 Type II, annual audits

Weaknesses
- No self-hosting; backend is proprietary
- Flat global pricing, no purchasing power parity
- Free tier: 1 GB storage, 150 msgs/day
- Offline sync-only; web app requires connection
- No WCAG statement; screen reader support rough

Proton Mail's infrastructure is hosted in data centers in Switzerland (Geneva HQ, Attinghausen underground bunker), Germany, and Norway, all within the EEA or Swiss jurisdiction recognized as equivalent to EU GDPR. In 2025, Proton began planning to add an AI compute cluster in the EU. The core Mail/VPN infrastructure remains in Switzerland.

Proton Mail provides full E2EE by default for messages between Proton accounts using OpenPGP. For messages to non-Proton addresses, zero-access encryption at rest applies. The client apps are open source and independently audited, confirming the encryption implementation. Key Transparency verifies the authenticity of public keys.

Proton AG's business model is subscription-based, not advertising. The privacy policy states Proton does not sell or share personal data with third parties for advertising or profiling. A Data Processing Agreement is available for business customers. Proton publishes an annual transparency report listing all government data requests received.

Proton does not use user email content for AI training. In February 2025, Proton published a public statement against encryption backdoors, reaffirming that user data privacy is inviolable. No opt-in or opt-out mechanism exists because Proton does not perform this practice at all.

2Openness & TransparencyLicense, auditability, open governance, and independent security assurance.87.5%
All Proton Mail client applications (web, Android, iOS, Bridge for desktop) are open source under the GPL license. Backend server-side code remains proprietary. The designation is 'open core' rather than fully OSI-licensed since users cannot self-host the full stack. The code is available on GitHub at github.com/ProtonMail.

Proton Mail has undergone multiple independent audits and certifications: ISO 27001 certified in May 2024; SOC 2 Type II attestation in July 2025; an independent audit by Securitum published in November 2025. Annual third-party audits are commissioned with public summaries.

3Pricing ModelHow users pay for the product, whether pricing relies on exploiting user data, and how fair and transparent prices are across regions.58.8%
Proton Mail's main paid plans are annual subscriptions: Mail Plus at $3.99/month and Proton Unlimited at $9.99/month, both billed annually. Monthly billing is available at a premium. There is no lifetime license option.

Proton Mail offers a permanent free tier: 1 GB storage, up to 150 messages per day, 1 email address, and access to web and mobile apps. The free tier works for basic use but is limited. Crucially, it does not monetize user data — Proton's free tier is supported by paid subscribers.

Proton's pricing page is clear and well-structured. All plan limits (storage, addresses, features) are detailed. No hidden fees. The difference between annual and monthly pricing is disclosed upfront. No manipulative upgrade prompts or artificial urgency patterns are present.

Proton Mail does not have a documented regional pricing policy. Prices are published in USD/EUR/GBP and apply globally without adjustment for local purchasing power. Users in lower-income countries pay the same absolute price as those in high-income countries.

4Ownership & PortabilityUser control over data and vendor lock-in, including export, self-hosting, offline use, cross-platform availability, and accessibility.55%
Proton Mail provides an official open-source Export Tool (github.com/ProtonMail/proton-mail-export) that decrypts and exports emails to .mbox format, a widely supported open format. Contacts can be exported to vCard, and calendar data to .ics. Proton Mail Bridge also allows downloading all messages via standard IMAP to any email client.

Proton Mail does not provide a self-hosted version of its email backend. The service is cloud-only; users cannot run their own Proton Mail server. Proton Mail Bridge enables using third-party desktop email clients while still routing through Proton's infrastructure.

Proton Mail v7 (2026) introduced a native offline mode on iOS and Android. Users can read, compose, and organize mail without an internet connection, with messages syncing automatically when back online. This replaces the previous workaround of relying on Proton Mail Bridge with a desktop client for offline access. The web app still requires a connection.

Proton Mail is available on: Web browser, iOS, Android, macOS, Windows, and Linux (via Bridge). Proton Mail is also distributed via F-Droid (the open-source Android app repository), qualifying as availability on an open, non-proprietary platform.

Proton Mail supports keyboard shortcuts and offers dark/light theme options. However, screen reader support has been noted by the NVDA community as 'tricky' with navigation challenges in some interface areas. No formal WCAG compliance statement or dedicated accessibility policy page exists on Proton's website.

5Independence & EthicsOwnership, independence from Big Tech, stability over time, and whether the company shows responsible behavior in ethics, advertising, and environmental impact.93.3%
In June 2024, Proton transitioned to a non-profit foundation model. The Proton Foundation — established by founders Andy Yen, Jason Stockman, and Dingchao Lu — became the primary shareholder of Proton AG. Swiss foundations are legally obligated to act in accordance with their mission. The board includes Sir Tim Berners-Lee and Carissa Véliz (Oxford AI Ethics).

The Proton Foundation becoming primary shareholder in June 2024 is an ownership change, but an internal, positive restructuring. Founders transferred shares to a foundation they created to protect the mission. There was no external acquisition, VC takeover, or Big Tech involvement.
