Chrome’s engine is open source. However, Google adds its own proprietary features, has kept third-party cookies active, and now automatically adds Gemini AI to your tabs by default.

About the assessment

Chrome is based on Chromium, an open-source project that anyone can look at. This openness, along with a strong bug bounty program, helps keep security strong. You can turn on end-to-end encryption for your synced data by setting a custom passphrase, but this is not the default. On the other hand, Google decided in October 2025 to keep third-party cookies instead of replacing them as planned. In May 2026, Chrome added a 4GB Gemini Nano model to devices without asking users first, and even if you turn off the main setting, tab text might still be sent to Google. In 2024, a federal court ruled that Google kept its search monopoly in part through Chrome distribution deals. The DOJ is still appealing for a breakup.
